Burgage Ball, Ledbury. 7 – 9pm.
The Prince of Wales pub in Church Lane has a beer menu that as well as describing the beer – fancy a “light and fruity beer with good hoppy bitterness”? then an Otter Bitter is for you – also provides the distance from the brewery. So that fruity Otter has come 87 miles, whereas a drop of Butty Back only has to stagger 9.5 miles to quench your thirst.
Well done to the Prince of Wales for thinking local.

Reeves plums were the pick of the day at a recent demonstration and supper event, held in celebration of Herefordshire Food Week. Hosted by Ledbury Food Group, the evening saw food enthusiasts from across the county inspired, with appetites whetted, by current Herefordshire Food Champion, Rachel Hicks, founder of Just Rachel Quality Desserts and Meg Edmonds, owner of the farm shop Roots at Little Verzons.
During the evening, Rachel presented a 45 minute cookery demonstration, creating two dishes; poached plums flavoured with cardamom and rose water and a plum, hazelnut and chocolate dessert cake. With a relaxed atmosphere, foodies were able to ask Rachel questions throughout the demo, with Will Edmonds on-hand to explain more about the varied and colourful abundance of plums available this season.
Reflecting all that is great about fresh, locally produced food, Meg dished up Chicken Cacciatore, a slow-cooked Italian dish which showcased the family’s home-reared organic chicken. This was accompanied by freshly picked salad and olive focaccia, baked for the occasion in the new farm shop kitchens’ at Roots. Rachel’s plum dessert cake, poached plums and plum and marzipan ice cream rounded off the superb seasonal supper.
Commenting on the success of the event, Fran Robinson of Ledbury Food Group said: “Many shoppers have lost touch with what ‘seasonal’ really means. When a fruit is in season you taste it at its best. The success of this event has gone a long way to prove that people want to learn more about seasonal produce and that cooking and baking with it doesn’t have to be complicated!”
Due to an unprecedented response to the event, Ledbury Food Group and Roots at Little Verzons will be hosting more seasonal demonstration and supper evenings in the coming months.
